The Republic of Maldives, with its 1,190 islands, divided into 20 administrative atolls, stretches over an area of   115,300 sq. km. This Indian Ocean island nation of Maldives has a total land area of about 300 sq. km. with only 198 islands inhabited.  Hence it is evident that the country has to rely heavily on multi-modal transport and telecommunication, and that it poses a challenge to the establishment of a proper and efficient network for the sectors. Furthermore, with the population of just over 300,000 dispersed thinly across the islands, the cost of providing transportation and communication, along with the required infrastructure, is high.
However, due to the dire need for improving the transport and communication facilities for the socio-economic development of the Country, our collective aim is to provide an economically efficient, technologically advanced, and a safer, reliable and an affordable, transport and communication system which will assist the Country in its continued economic growth. We also do believe that to achieve these goals there is a critical need for the improvement of transport sector operations and its efficiency through institutional and human resource development.
Also we believe that, to enhance and expedite the development of the transport and communication sectors, a special emphasis has to be laid to encourage and increase the private/public sector participation in the investments contributing to the various infrastructure related services development projects.
In this effort, the Ministry of Transport and Communication is responsible for formulating policies, to manage and regulate the transport and communication sectors in the Republic of Maldives. To this effect, we plan, implement, and monitor, all development projects related to sea, land, and air transport, and telecommunication networks in the Country.
We would not like to make these statements, without emphasizing the fact that to achieve these esteemed goals, a concentrated and constructively critical contribution from the general public is of utmost value. Therefore, we are hopeful that through this official website of the Ministry of Transport and Communication, the community itself will be able to contribute their valued comments and advice required for the development of these sectors.
